COURT OF FIVES giveaway

It’s that time. The long wait has been whittled down to a mere 4 months (okay, that still seems like a long time to me, but less than 12 months, all right?)

SO: I am giving away TWO COPIES of the ARC for COURT OF FIVES (publication date 18 August 2015). (ETA TWO copies)

Elliott_CourtOfFives_web

Little, Brown Books for Young Reader says: “In this imaginative escape into an enthralling new world, World Fantasy Award finalist Kate Elliott’s first young adult novel weaves an epic story of a girl struggling to do what she loves in a society suffocated by rules of class and privilege.”

I say: This book was inspired by Little Women, Sasuke/American Ninja Warrior, the Count of Monte Cristo, and Greco-Roman Egypt, and is also my love letter to girls who play sports.

But don’t take my word for it:

“Kate Elliott’s magic and mastery is better than ever. Court of Fives enchanted me from start to finish, with characters and worlds that lingered long after I turned the final page.” —Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of the Legend series and the Young Elites series

“Haunting. Epic. Impassioned. Layered. Breathtaking. This isn’t just a novel; it is a coup d’état of the soul. Prepare to be ravished by Kate Elliott’s Court of Fives.”Ann Aguirre, New York Times bestselling author of the Razorland trilogy

“Fast-paced, tense, and riveting. I couldn’t put it down, and you won’t be able to either!”Tamora Pierce, author of the Tortall series and the Circle of Magic series

“This book is amazing. Kate Elliott combines everything I love best in a YA novel. Jes is a killer protagonist, tough and capable, but also lost in her upbringing and faced with impossible choices that test her character and her beliefs…. This book will not fail you.”Gail Carriger, New York Times bestselling author of the Parasol Protectorate series and the Finishing School series

To ENTER:

1. Tell me (in comments) why I should pick you to read it! Your answer can be short, long, funny, serious, both, neither, can include a gif or be a gif or art or music or merely text. “I’m so looking forward to it!” is just as acceptable as a 1000 word discussion of whether Cat Barahal prefers pie or cake. I’m drawing the winner randomly regardless. I just need to make you work for it.

2. Domestic USA and International entries welcome. World-wide, because I love and appreciate all my readers and I know you are everywhere.

ETA: LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE USA or INT’L, please (some of the early comments haven’t see this ETA–let me know if you see this later, thanks!)

3. Contest open from 15 April to 25 April, midnight USA Pacific Time (using that instead of Hawaii time because I don’t stay up until midnight)

As of April 20 you can also bid on an ARC at Con or Bust, a fundraiser to help fans of color attend sff conventions.

ETA: A copy is going out to winner Barbara M today (international!). The second winner hasn’t yet replied to my email so . . . I’m giving it two more days.

  1. You should pick me to win because I work in a bookstore, and am super excited for this book and would like to read it early so I know how to best sell it to people!

  2. Mark Twain said there were three progressively better ways to gratify an author:

    (1) say you read their book

    (2) say you read all their books

    (3) ask to see their forthcoming book

    I qualify for all three!

  3. Court of Fives is a book I’ve been waiting for since I first learned about it, but at least I haven’t read Cold Steel yet, which means that I have a book to read while waiting for Court of Fives to come out.

  4. I would like to win it because I am a teacher and I am constantly giving books to my students and I work at a bookstore on the weekend. Also because I love your books

  5. I would love to read this, because the part about Little Women meets Sasuke/American Ninja Warrior just sounds way too cool. I like your description so much more than the publisher’s, they should have just used yours 🙂

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  6. I heard you read form this in 2013, and I’ve been looking forward to it ever since!

    (I’m in the US)

  7. You had me at “Little Women”. I love that book. I love the interaction between the 4 sisters. I love the book so much I have 4 copies. I see one with a different cover at a used bookstore or garage sale and I just have to buy it.

  8. Well, I am really hopeful you will draw my name, as it would be really, really fun to be able to read this book early and blurb it on goodreads and facebook. I have not been very lucky to win drawings but there is always hope, isn’t there?

  9. Because I love your writing, love female protagonists, and love YA fiction!!

    And I’m Canadian BTW. 🙂

  10. Oh man! I am so excited to read this. I, as a young woman who wishes to punch people to get my way (but usually don’t), I LOVE plots that involve young women punching things to get their way. And for the record, Cat prefers pie, but enjoys the portability of cakes. <3

  11. I hardly ever have a chance to enter as I live in England.

Ps I do have all your books (so far).

  12. I have loved your work since I was introduced to your Crown of Stars series and would love an opportunity to read this one EARLY! 🙂

I live in the UK by the way.

  13. I preorder each of your new books and then wait impatiently for them to arrive. I would love to receive an early copy of Court of Fives to cut down my wait! I’m in New Zealand.

  14. I’m not witty enough for this and my tooth is aching right now like a mother but, uhm, I’d say throw the book at me (nicely please) and in exchange I promise to read and review and share it. I’m from Philippines btw! Mabuhay!!! Thanks so much for this giveaway.

  15. Because I love your books and really appreciate how you represent women in your books and in your career. I’m in the US

  16. I don’t have any better reason you should pick me than anyone else responding to this, but I have been reading your books for a *very* long time: I picked up a publisher-giveaway copy of “A Passage of Stars” at Boskone back in the day, and later heard all about you when I was in music school with Sonja. I have been a big fan ever since, and am looking forward to reading this regardless of how I get it. Keep on writing!

  17. You should pick me because:

    1. Little, Brown doesn’t send me ARCs and I don’t want to wait until publication day. (you know I preordered an ecopy of this as soon as I could).
    2. I want to complete my “Kate Elliott card” and add this to my to-read list. I want to get (back() on the short list of Kate Elliott Completist and without this, I can’t.
    3. Puppy dog eye looks.

USA (even if we’ve only met in person in London…)

  18. Hello, why you should pick me up to read this book because, you know im Indonesian, i really want to proficient in english. and to train my english skill I have read many english books , like this book. Thats why you must to pick me and i know this book is very interested to read 🙂

  19. You should pick me so I can tell you how much I loved it when we meet at Sasquan!

  20. You should pick me because I loooove your books. I already have 100 books I need to read and not enough time. But one can never have enough books. I will drop everything else I’m reading just to read yours!

    -USA

  21. I’ve been looking forward to Court of Fives for a long time. It sounds utterly amazing and I can’t wait to read it – so, I’d love to get to read it before it’s officially out. I think it’s going to press so many of my fiction-squee buttons!

Also, I’ve been reading your short story collection and it’s excellent. This is such a good year for Kate Elliott books 🙂

    (Int’l – Finland)

  22. I want to win because I love delving into the worlds you create. Seriously, no other author creates such vivid and imaginative worlds like you do <3

  23. Top 3 reasons why you should pick me:
    (1) COF has been on my need-like-air GR shelf since I found out about it!
    (2) I’m a book blogger and want to review it!
    (3) I only read softcovers (a weird quirk of mine), and if I don’t somehow get my hands on an ARC I’ll have to wait for the paperback release. T-T
    (USA)

    Thanks for the giveaway!! 🙂

  24. I’ve always loved reading all of your work and I’m so excited to be able to read something soon that might be a little bit different from the usual adult aimed novels that you’ve written in the past. I do have to say that by far by most loved work of yours is Crown of Stars though. I simply can’t express how much the world sucked me in and the amount of detail put into everything left me in awe. Ever since I moved to Japan it’s been more difficult to get copies of your books, but I’ve still read everything you’ve put out since then! I would love to be able to read this novel soon as well!! (Especially since it usually takes about 5 months or so after the US release for me to be able to get my hands on your books!) Thanks again so much for doing things like this!

    And I’m international 😀

  25. I want to be the very best / that no one ever was / to capture them is my test / to train them is my cause / I travel across the land / searching far and wide / each Pokemon to understand / the power that’s inside
Yes, I’m in that kind of mood. ;D
I am in the US and thank you so much for this giveaway!

  26. Because I’m going to need a book to read as a reward once I finish my thesis (so close!).
    (International)

  27. why you should give me the book, because i want to read that book so badly 😀
    (Indonesian)

  28. You should pick me to win because I preach your word like a religion and I’ve made all of my friends interested in reading your books and getting to know your wonderful books.

    (international)

  29. You should pick me, because I’m a lawyer and its a sad unhappy job and this is something that would make me happy. Also bc I’m NOT a sporty lady, but I kind of want to be? Also bc other than World of Warcraft and playing with my cats, reading is pretty much what I do with all my free time.

  30. Pick me because once I read it I will shove it in all my friend’s faces and make them read it. Trust me, I’m persuasive.
    (US) thanks for the giveaway!

  31. I really want to read a fantasy novel that’s “a love letter to girls who play sports”
    (USA)

  32. Oh man! I have been waiting for this book for a while. Anything to do with fantasy has me there.
I already talk about books I’m excited for with my friends and family. They get my bookishness shoved down their throats all the time. I’m sure it would make them happy if I started ranting about some new books.
I also give really extremely honest reviews on my blog.
Located in US. Thanks for the giveaway!

  33. your should pick me because I love reading new types of books that are inspired by classics and history. And becaus I am Canadian. 😉 International. Thanks for the chance.

  34. I’m always on the look out for new books to read, especially different genres. But I lack both, space to store my books and money to buy new ones and/or shelves to properly store them in. I stopped sitting on my reading chair long ago, lest that hoplessly overloaded book-board comes crashing down on me when it decides that enough is enough.

  35. Because the moment I saw this book on Goodreads, I know this will be worth my time! Thank you so much for this chance! And btw, I’m from the US.

  36. I’d love to win this because one of my favorite authors (Gail Carriger) already tweeted and praised the book. She is never wrong, so this means that it must be amazing.

Plus, I love your description of it! There need to be more love letters to girls who play sports.

  37. You should pick me because I went squee at “Little Women” and “The Count of Monte Cristo” in the same sentence.

  38. TMI reason why:
Because I’m having a stupendous PMS-cry just now and am eager to change my mental channel to your giveaway and to thrill myself with a new world-in-a-book!
    Thanks for the contest!
    (In the USA)

  39. Please pick me for an advance copy. So few of these contests are open to those of us in Canada (international!) and I’d love the chance to win. I devour books voraciously and have had a love of fantasy and ancient history as long as I can remember so I’m always looking for great new reads in those genres.

  40. …because I’m teaching my students about literary essays (not the canned “this is how you write a formulaic essay” kind, but the kind that we all love to read on blogs and book critics’ columns). I’d LOVE to be able to show them an ARC in hand, and let them see my excitement about reading and writing about my theories and reactions to the book. And then actually write a literary essay of my own to share with them, of course.

Also, I love your stuff to death.

    -USA

  41. My favourite current thought on the subject of life (I say favourite current because I change them as I go to fit what I know and can understand) and it’s creation is that no deity is watching over us in a grand cosmic sense because I reckon this entire Universe is simply a letter in a word in a conversation between things beyond the concepts of our reality and universe. So all our actions and everything that has happened is simply the pronunciation of this letter that is being spoken.
Makes all the languages we could learn to speak seem super easy now hahaha

Oh yes, I’d like to be apart of the giveaway and I’m International =) To clarify further, I live on Australia. Not sure how Australia feels about being lived on the whole though…

  42. I am always on the hunt for new YA books to buy for the library I work at so I can spread the love with more people.

    I am International (Australia)

  43. You should pick me, because the next line of homemade is inspired by the Jaran series, and am currently formulating a crown of stars. I very much look forward to reading this next series to see what inspiration i can draw from it.

  44. You should pick me because I am a fellow author, and I really enjoyed Cold Magic. Also, I will post a review of it on my blog/website and publicize your book release if possible. Plus, I just really liked your other books.
    -Kara

  45. You should pick me because I love Kate Elliot and YA, so the combination is a dream come true for me.

  46. Pick me! Because I’ve been enjoying your books for years. Because I love your use of strong female characters and POC characters. Because you get it. Because I love words!

  47. Oh! Forgot to mention I am in the US. Must remember reading directions=good thing.

  48. I’m desperate for something to read! Oh and I’m a librarian and really like your writing.

    I’m in Canada, so International.

  49. I need to win because Darynda Jones shared the post for this giveaway. I need to see what this book is like! Thanks for the giveaway.

  50. Because I’ve got a reading list at least as tall as I am, and Court of Fives would look completely fabulous at the top of it. Because I need more wonderful, complicated YA heroines in my life and after Cat and Bea I know I won’t be disappointed. And because I’m too poor to buy it but I will anyway :p

    (International)

  51. pick me because you had me at the greco-roman steampunk thing. and cause I live in the Philippines where there is (i think) a limited supply of awesome steampunk books. 🙂

  52. Oh! Pick me! (International, Canada) Cat wouldn’t have to choose! She’d have her cake (and pie) and eat it too because that’s just who she is. Kick-ass awesome. One of my favourite characters and favourite series. I could definitely use an escape into your fictional worlds, looking after my 8 month old son. A bath, cuppa tea, and an ARC of Court of Fives = Heaven!!!

  53. You should pick me because my teenage daughter and I are now reading some of the same books. Therefore, this novel would be enjoyed twice as much 😉

  54. This book sounds great and I am always looking for a great new fantasy series! I live in the US

  55. If you choose me you might have Harry Potter-like success, and might win the Nobel Prize in literature. If these are things that interest you, you should pick me. If they don’t, you should still pick me, because I am awesome.

  56. Pick me because:

    1) I’d love to review it on the blog, but Little, Brown normally don’t send me review copies.
    2) After reading The Very Best of Kate Elliott, I’m on a quest to read ALL of your books in the coming year or two, so better start this series at once instead of playing catch up 😉

    and

    3) I’m building my girls a collection of books to read in their teens that will have proper representation for them, which means Court of Fives can’t not be there!

    (I’m international, The Netherlands)

  57. The inspiration behind reading your books came from my mother! She’s read all of your books. Now every time a new one comes out there are 4 of us in the family fighting to read it first! Would be awesome to get hold of one first! – International shipping as we from lil New Zealand!!

  58. I’d like to win because the chances of an Aus release date in the near future are pretty slim, and shipping can be horrendous.

  59. I want this book, because ever since I finished reading Cold Steel, life has been worthless, I tell you! Worthless! I’m so excited to read it.

    (I’m in the US.)

  60. I just started a new book blog, and I’m looking for chances to start reviewing ARCs. I’m also looking forward to the release of this book, because it sounds really interesting! Plus, as a bibliophile, ARCs are the kind of thing I like to brag about owning.

  61. Pick me, pick me, pick me! I need a new Kate Elliott book. Anytime someone requests book suggestions, I say anything by Kate Elliott.
Also I need something new to read on the train 🙂
    Intl.

  62. To demonstrate why I should get a copy I have written an essay.

Gummy worms or gummy bears? Why, gummy worms of course! Gummy worms are very beneficial for the environment. They churn the soil so that plants can grow more easily. As they move along they leave bits of themselves behind that can not only sprout to become new gummy worms but sometimes revert back to their parent flavor, which is where the inestimable gummy cherry comes from. Gummy bears on the other hand can be very destructive. They dig in garbage cans and paw through camp sites or chase cars looking for food. Beware coming face to face with the dreaded gummy bear, it is only a lucky few who are ever heard from again.

  63. You should pick me only if the gods of random accept my sacrifice and move your hand in my direction.
But I want to win an ARC because it sounds like something I’d like to read.

  64. You should pick me because I might die if I don’t read this book soon! And you don’t want to be responsible for my dying of anticipation do you?
(And before you say I’m exaggerating, my cousins wife’s ex husbands third cousin DID die of anticipation! I know cause I read it in the Enquirer!)

  65. Because I coined the phrase “giant justice eagles” and I am at 11/25 on the Kate Elliott backlist bingo. 😀 (Int’l)

  66. You should pick me, because I am extremely excited for this. I just recently discovered your work and just finished what you have of the Spirit Walker. Your work is a breath of fresh air.

  67. Chuck Norris endorses my reviews… at least in my dreams he does… and if you don’t pick me I just might burst into tears and follow that up with an interpretive dance that showcases my existential sense of pain and loss… no one really wants to see that!

  68. I live in Australia and hardly any publishers/authors do international giveaways. Also, I’m a karate loving girl who wants to see other sports loving girls in books.

  69. Thank you for the giveaway:) I love your crosssroads trilogy, I just love the worlds and characters you have created, it’s as simple as that:) in the UK.

  70. You probably shouldn’t, since I won the most excellent Very Best of Kate Elliot. But I wants it so much, I can’t help but enter. I also play the coolest sport you’ve never heard of, called Rolfball. Girls…sports…this book is for me? 🙂

  71. Please pick me! I LOVE all your books and I would share with friends. I am in the US, unless a tornado blows us to Mexico!
