Free book giveaway for teachers and librarians! Thanksgiving 2017

For Thanksgiving I’d like to thank librarians and teachers for their hard work by giving away several dozen copies of my books to teachers and librarians.

Here’s how this will work (and with thanks to Malinda Lo who gave me her template for a librarian/teacher giveaway):

·   this giveaway is only for teachers and librarians (any librarians, not just youth librarians). I’m particularly hoping that libraries and schools that have low/non-existent book buying budgets can take advantage of this giveaway. I’d also love to see my YA trilogy in the hands of more teens!

·   first-come, first-served basis, because that’s what I can handle. If your first choice is gone, you’ll get your second choice, etc, until all the books are gone.

·   I am paying for all the shipping costs, so this is totally free to you. However, this means I can only ship to US mailing addresses. Sorry, non-US folks; I can’t afford the international shipping costs. The books will go out media mail so it may take some time for them to arrive.

·  I will sign the books. (signed only, not personalized)

1.  Email me at with the subject header Teacher/Librarian Giveaway.

2.  Please email me either from your work email or reference your work email in the body of the email so I can tell you’re legit (sorry, you know how it goes these days).

3. Include a mailing address so I can mail the books without having to ask for further information.

4.  List three choices in order of preference (as 1. 2. and 3.) I will fulfill first come/first served according to what is still available, so you’ll get your top choice if that’s still available, second if it isn’t, third (etc), until all the books are given away.

The List of Books/Audiobooks Available:

5 (five) sets of the complete Court of Fives trilogy in hardcover (Court of Fives, Poisoned Blade, & Buried Heart)

5 (five) paired sets of hardcovers of Poisoned Blade and Buried Heart

5 trade paperbacks of Poisoned Blade

5 (five) sets of the complete Court of Fives trilogy in audiobook CD (all three novels)

10 mass market copies of Cold Fire (Spiritwalker trilogy book 2)

10 trade paperbacks of Cold Steel (Spiritwalker trilogy book 3)

Thank you for the important work you do.

If you don’t want to email, or if you emailed and I didn’t respond that I’d gotten your email, you can fill out this google form:

P. S. Email me at if you have any questions.

Court of Fives_Elliott_CourtOfFives_HC-LOIn this imaginative escape into enthralling new lands, World Fantasy Award finalist Kate Elliott’s first young adult novel weaves an epic story of a girl struggling to do what she loves in a society suffocated by rules of class and privilege.

Jessamy’s life is a balance between acting like an upper-class Patron and dreaming of the freedom of the Commoners. But away from her family she can be whoever she wants when she sneaks out to train for The Fives, an intricate, multilevel athletic competition that offers a chance for glory to the kingdom’s best contenders. Then Jes meets Kalliarkos, and an unlikely friendship between two Fives competitors–one of mixed race and the other a Patron boy–causes heads to turn. When Kal’s powerful, scheming uncle tears Jes’s family apart, she’ll have to test her new friend’s loyalty and risk the vengeance of a royal clan to save her mother and sisters from certain death.”

I am giving away TWO copies of the ARC (Advance Reviewer Copy) of BLACK WOLVES. Official publication date in the US/Canada/UK/Australia/NZ is 3 November 2015. Rules below!

An exiled captain returns to help the son of the king who died under his protection in this rich and multi-layered first book in an action-packed new series.

Set in the same universe as the Crossroads Trilogy, Black Wolves begins a new, standalone trilogy in which two old people have to find and face the truth about their past, and three young people get caught up in the unexpected repercussions from a long-ago act of violence.

One early reader calls it: “a murder mystery at the heart of a political thriller wrapped up in an epic fantasy setting.”

Another likened the book to “Jane Austen’s Persuasion meets Dragon Age, played in family saga mode.”

“On a vast, colorful canvas, Kate Elliott has drawn dozens of characters who act and react with poetry and grit. Lush and textured, by turns moving, exciting, playful, and contemplative, Black Wolves is a masterpiece that soars with an epic soul.”―Ken Liu, Nebula, Hugo and World Fantasy award-winning author of the Grace of Kings

In celebration of Kate Elliott’s upcoming YA debut novel, COURT OF FIVES, we are giving away TWO (2) free copies of the hardcover just in time for its release on 18 Aug. 2015!

Little, Brown Books for Young Reader says: “In this imaginative escape into an enthralling new world, World Fantasy Award finalist Kate Elliott’s first young adult novel weaves an epic story of a girl struggling to do what she loves in a society suffocated by rules of class and privilege.”

Inspired by Little Women, Sasuke/American Ninja Warrior, the Count of Monte Cristo, and Greco-Roman Egypt, the novel is also Elliott’s love letter to girls who play sports. (Read more about the book’s description and current reviews here.)

Here are the rules:

1. To enter: Comment below with either a favorite sport & why OR if you don’t like sports, a favorite hobby/activity. Winners will be chosen by random draw.

2. The giveaway will run from 5 August to 11 August, ending at 10 PM Hawaii Time.

3. Domestic USA and International entries welcome. (Please let us know which you are in your comments!) Winners’ copies will be mailed out as soon as we confirm addresses.

P.S. You can also pre-order your copy of COURT OF FIVES on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Indiebound!

It’s that time. The long wait has been whittled down to a mere 4 months (okay, that still seems like a long time to me, but less than 12 months, all right?)

SO: I am giving away TWO COPIES of the ARC for COURT OF FIVES (publication date 18 August 2015). (ETA TWO copies)

Little, Brown Books for Young Reader says: “In this imaginative escape into an enthralling new world, World Fantasy Award finalist Kate Elliott’s first young adult novel weaves an epic story of a girl struggling to do what she loves in a society suffocated by rules of class and privilege.”

I say: This book was inspired by Little Women, Sasuke/American Ninja Warrior, the Count of Monte Cristo, and Greco-Roman Egypt, and is also my love letter to girls who play sports.

But don’t take my word for it:

“Kate Elliott’s magic and mastery is better than ever. Court of Fives enchanted me from start to finish, with characters and worlds that lingered long after I turned the final page.” —Marie Lu, New York Times bestselling author of the Legend series and the Young Elites series

“Haunting. Epic. Impassioned. Layered. Breathtaking. This isn’t just a novel; it is a coup d’état of the soul. Prepare to be ravished by Kate Elliott’s Court of Fives.”Ann Aguirre, New York Times bestselling author of the Razorland trilogy

“Fast-paced, tense, and riveting. I couldn’t put it down, and you won’t be able to either!”Tamora Pierce, author of the Tortall series and the Circle of Magic series

“This book is amazing. Kate Elliott combines everything I love best in a YA novel. Jes is a killer protagonist, tough and capable, but also lost in her upbringing and faced with impossible choices that test her character and her beliefs…. This book will not fail you.”Gail Carriger, New York Times bestselling author of the Parasol Protectorate series and the Finishing School series

1. Tell me (in comments) why I should pick you to read it! Your answer can be short, long, funny, serious, both, neither, can include a gif or be a gif or art or music or merely text. “I’m so looking forward to it!” is just as acceptable as a 1000 word discussion of whether Cat Barahal prefers pie or cake. I’m drawing the winner randomly regardless. I just need to make you work for it.

2. Domestic USA and International entries welcome. World-wide, because I love and appreciate all my readers and I know you are everywhere.

ETA: LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE USA or INT’L, please (some of the early comments haven’t see this ETA–let me know if you see this later, thanks!)

3. Contest open from 15 April to 25 April, midnight USA Pacific Time (using that instead of Hawaii time because I don’t stay up until midnight)

As of April 20 you can also bid on an ARC at Con or Bust, a fundraiser to help fans of color attend sff conventions.

ETA: A copy is going out to winner Barbara M today (international!). The second winner hasn’t yet replied to my email so . . . I’m giving it two more days.

Copies of COLD STEEL arrived on my doorstep this afternoon.

I can’t read them all, plus I already know the story, and meanwhile the book is not officially released until 25 June 2013.

[The ebook will be released into the wild on 25 June but it is possible that the print book will start showing up earlier in bookstores just as the print copies of COLD FIRE did. So if you are buying the print version, keep your eyes open.]

Obviously the only thing to do is to have a giveaway.

I’m giving away four copies of COLD STEEL.

Here are the rules:

1. The giveaway will be open for one week, from today 20 May until 9 p.m. HT (Hawaii Time) on Monday 27 May.

2. Anyone can enter internationally.

3. To enter, ask me a question about the Spiritwalker Trilogy *or* about writing *or* about the science fiction/fantasy field and media *or* about something else. Everyone who asks a question is entered. There are no stupid questions.

4. Three of the copies will be picked randomly from all entries (here, on livejournal, and on tumblr). One copy will be picked at my discretion based on the questions themselves–but only one. There may be a few of you who worry about whether your question is good enough or clever enough or interesting enough: It is. And anyway, as per the above, lest you are still secretly fretting as I would be, three of the winners will be picked without regard to the question asked.

I will mail out the winners’ copies as soon as I get addresses (on May 28 if possible).

5. After you have read the book you can review it IF YOU WISH, or not review it, as you wish. This giveaway is in the nature of thanking my readers.

Just to clarify, any review should be the honest opinion of the reviewer. While I naturally hope all of you love the novel, I am aware that not everyone will, and reviews should be honest. However, IF you decide to review it, I ask (as per Orbit’s request) that you not review it until late June when the books are available.

Do not underestimate the importance of the social media conversation about books. The conversation is a fabulous thing, and it matters.

A brief reminder: Check out my book event dates (San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Seattle, Portland), and come if you can!

One last thing: YOU GUYS. Thank you for being the best readers.

Spiritwalker Trilogy Giveaway at Fantasy Cafe

Last year and now this year Fantasy Cafe has run a Women in SFF Month in April with daily posts by women writers on all things science fiction, fantasy, writing, publishing, media, geek, and so on. It’s a great series and you should check out this year’s wonderful posts.

My post, up today, talks about the gender gap in reviewing and visibility. You can find it here.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Kristen had (unbeknownst to me) contacted Orbit Books and has a set of the entire Spiritwalker Trilogy as a giveaway. Exciting! You’ll find the entry information at the post.
